Forest ecosystems are found all over the world. Because they are home to predatory animals, many forests have become linked with danger in the human psyche.
European folklore and mythology have many examples of dangerous, spooky forests. Classic fairy tales hold that forests are the home of mischievous sprites, fairies, and elves.
In classic tales such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Hansel and Gretel," children who roam the forest paths alone are dangerously abducted.
These stories may have served as a teaching aid, making children reluctant to wander off alone.
In the visual arts, spooky forests are often depicted as if the trees are "dead" - devoid of leaves, as when deciduous trees lose their leaves in the autumn in temperate regions.
These bare, skeletal forests seem to portend the fate of any who may wander there. Spooky forest settings are commonly seen in Halloween decorations.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Spooky Forest
1. Begin by drawing a large circle. This will become the full moon. Below it, draw a curved line across your page. This is the horizon line, where the ground meets the sky.
2. Begin drawing a gnarled old tree. Use two wavy, curved lines for the trunk. Use curved lines that meet in a "V" shape to create a fork in the branches. Draw more forked branches and gnarled limbs coming off the trunk.
3. Draw a few more short tree limbs, using pairs of curved lines that meet at points. Draw another root using a curved line. Texture the bark of the tree using curved and spiral lines. Then, draw a second tree. Again, use curved lines to create the trunk and branches. Allow the branches to fork, bringing the lines together in "V" shapes.
4. Continue drawing small branches on the second tree. Allow the limbs to fork until they become individual lines. Then, draw a third tree using the same methods.
5. Draw more trees in the distance. Because they are farther away, they will appear smaller. Use pairs of lines to create the trunks, with the branches forking into individual curved lines.
6. Next, draw a graveyard in the distance. Draw overlapping curved lines to texture the uneven ground. Use curved lines to sketch rounded tombstones, with another line at the edge to give it a three-dimensional appearance. Draw a pentagon-shaped or five-sided tombstone, with parallel lines on one side for a 3-D effect. Use thick lines to draw "t" shapes, indicating crosses.
7. Draw "C" shaped lines to indicate the craters of the moon. Then, draw several bats silhouetted against it. Use curved lines to outline the bats' ears, wings, bodies, and feet.
8. Draw more trees in the distance, using pairs of lines for the trunks and larger branches. Allow these to fork into single curved lines.
9. Draw more trees in the far distance, completing the forest.
Color your spooky cartoon forest. Dark colors are often used.
